“Kronos has led and continues to lead what surely must be the longest unending revolution by any ensemble ever in music history.” – Los Angeles Times

Fresh from winning a third career Grammy Award (for its 2019 CD of this concert’s repertoire), San Francisco’s ever-innovative Kronos Quartet travels beyond musical and terrestrial boundaries in this first-ever D.C. performance of Terry Riley’s masterwork, Sun Rings. Co-commissioned for Kronos by NASA, Sun Rings combines live performance by string quartet and chorus—in this performance, members of D.C. favorites Choral Arts Society of Washington—with video footage and “space sounds” from NASA, with visual design by Willie Williams (whose past collaborators include Laurie Anderson, U2, R.E.M., Lady Gaga, and the Rolling Stones).

Over the evening-length performance, Sun Rings draws on musical influences from around the globe—although, as PopMatters put it, “With Sun Rings,… the concept of ‘world music’ is a strangely limited one, as it includes contributions from outside our planet.” With its vast perspective and immersive range of expression, Sun Rings offers an inspiring meditation on humanity and our place in the universe.

Terry Riley also appears in performance this season with Gyan Riley on May 9, 2020.

This performance is made possible in part through the generous support of Pamela Sutherland.
