Madam's Organ event

Performance Information

Madam's Organ hosts Washington Performing Arts for its weekly Nonprofits Profit series. A portion of proceeds from all food & beverage purchases go to benefit Mars Arts D.C., Washington Performing Arts' platform for presenting DMV artists throughout the District. Join us for featured performances by YÀNJÚ and Sheila, two local acts whose performances transcend genre boundaries and champion the experiences of marginalized communities.

YÀNJÚ is an experimental singer-songwriter from Gaithersburg, Maryland. With their band, they use music to explore mythology and various Black musical traditions to conjure up an ephemeral, post-binary cosmos where one’s most authentic self can be fully realized. Their music combines the cultural and historical aesthetics of Afrofuturism and ecofuturism as well the sonic styles of jazz, electronic & sacred music to create their own unique Afrocelestine philosophy and artistic movement.

Sheila is an all-black, all-female ensemble based in Washington, D.C. Their music draws on the experiences of being young millennials, the intersection of being a black woman in today’s polarizing society, trying to find their musical voice in a mostly male-dominated industry, and on the overwhelmingly unreported experiences of other marginalized communities. Their music blends rock, hard rock, and Afropunk.
