Men and Women of the Gospel Choir
30th Anniversary Celebration
Sun, Nov 20, 5 p.m. | Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center
Join us for an evening of inspiration and celebration as our very own Men and Women of the Gospel Choir marks 30 years of glorious harmony. A focal point of Washington Performing Arts’s producing season, the gospel music programs have garnered local, national and international acclaim. For this milestone showcase, the choir performs favorite arrangements of secular and sacred music from contemporary and classic composers. Artistic Director Theodore Thorpe III, a bastion of choral singing and music direction in the DMV, directs the concert in partnership with special guests and former directors: Evelyn Simpson Curenton, Founding Artistic Director; and Stanley J. Thurston, Artistic Director Emeritus. The program also features video tributes and other performance highlights.
Tickets are $40. Don’t miss this jubilant one-night event!
A Night at Café Society
Fri, Nov 11, 8 p.m. | Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club
For one incredible night only, recording artist Sheléa, Helen Hayes winner Nova Y. Payton, trumpeter Etienne Charles, multi-genre instrumentalist Damien Sneed, singer/songwriter Justin Trawick, gospel/jazz pianist Anthony "Tony" Walker, and host Mark Gregory take to the stage for A Night at Café Society at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club. Inspired by 1930s and ’40s performances at New York’s Café Society, the first integrated nightclub in America, the evening pays tribute to the venue where a 19-year-old Hazel Scott held court with the likes of Count Basie, Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe and other legendary performers. Tables and theatre seating are now available, and going fast! This performance is part of our two-season tribute to Hazel Scott.
