“One of the most penetratingly serious masters of the keyboard before the public today. Full stop.”
—Boston Globe

Home Delivery Plus travels to Europe, where a living legend of classical piano, Sir András Schiff, will record a program for our viewers, brilliantly uniting performance and pedagogy. Focusing as ever on finding fresh and revealing nuances in the piano repertoire, Schiff begins with a Headline Artist recital of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Then, he steps into his well-known role of master educator, in an insightful Linger Longer lecture on Mozart’s Adagio in B minor. As those who attended Schiff’s back-to-back Schubert recital–lecture events for WPA will recall, the opportunity to experience Schiff’s artistry and delve into the thinking behind it is a treat not to be missed.

BACH - Sinfonia No. 9 in F minor, BWV 795
BEETHOVEN - Sonata No. 12 in A-flat Major, Op. 26
MOZART - Adagio in B minor, K. 540
BEETHOVEN - Sonata No. 31 in A-flat Major, Op. 110

Featuring a Headline Artist performance plus:

Linger Longer: Sir András Schiff presents an all-new lecture on Mozart’s stately and contemplative Adagio in B minor, K. 540.

Note: Home Delivery Plus viewers will have a second opportunity to experience Sir András Schiff, in conversation with pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati (June 4–10).

Single-Event Price: $25

Notes on the Spotify Playlist
Curated by Anastasia Tsioulcas

In his latest recital for Washington Performing Arts, Sir András Schiff performs the music of three composers with whose music he is deeply associated: Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven. A highlight of Schiff’s Home Delivery Plus recital is a performance of Mozart’s Adagio in B minor—a brief, stand-alone and deeply poignant piece which Schiff will address in his Linger Longer lecture. This combination of musical intensity and rigorous scholarship is a prime example of Schiff’s signature approach to his work, resulting in performances of stunning clarity, insight and freshness.

For this Spotify playlist, I’ve paired some of Schiff’s extensive recordings of these three composers with works by two others whose music figures largely in Schiff’s artistic explorations: Bach—whose music the pianist has said he plays “every day”—and fellow Hungarian Bela Bartók, whose lyrical Piano Concerto No. 3 and spiky, rough-hewn Roumanian Folk Dances provide a 20th-century counterpoint to the earlier masters’ music.
