“The Spektral Quartet likes to put on performances that are not so much concerts as high-energy thrill rides for musically inquisitive listeners.” – Chicago Tribune

Experience multi-sensory immersion with the world premiere of Enigma, a collaboration between the incandescent minds of two eminent Icelandic creatives: composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir and video artist Sigurdur Gudjonsson. Through enchanting sounds and opulent visuals, Enigma uncovers the dualities of friction and flow, expansion and contraction, and tenderness and tension to unmask the universality of these vital alliances. The 2019 Grammy-nominated Spektral Quartet is one of America’s most innovative chamber ensembles, having commissioned more than 85 composers, including George Lewis, Marcos Balter, and Augusta Read Thomas. Spektral’s approach provokes discovery in beloved classics and animates curiosity in works of living composers.

This performance is made possible in part through the generous support of Jenny Bilfield and Joel Phillip Friedman.

Enigma is a work for string quartet and video art by Anna Thorvaldsdottir (composer) and Sigurdur Gudjónsson (video artist), commissioned by Spektral Quartet and Washington Performing Arts.

The Spektral Quartet and Washington Performing Arts’ Mars Arts D.C. project collaborate to present special residency events throughout the city, in conjunction with the premiere of Enigma. Details to be announced.
